We want a sauna!

At the beginning of 2020, we decided to finally build our own sauna in-house. With two small children we no longer had the time to go to the sauna. And when in March 2020 the first lock-down came due to the Corona virus, I started planning our own sauna down to the smallest detail.

Here I report on the months of planning and the construction of that sauna. I started building on November 12, 2020 and the sauna has been ready since December 30, 2020. Since then we have been going to our sauna once or twice a week.

Wellness oasis

The goal was to turn our laundry cellar into a small wellness oasis. Before that, there were really only the washing machine and dryer, and all the other things that are put in a cellar and forgotten. The corner where we wanted the sauna is unfortunately only 196 centimeters wide. That is why we had the choice between a cheap cabin in standard size. In that case we should only have assembled the supplied kit (much less work!), But we would not have been able to use the entire width. The other alternative was a tailor-made sauna, but that option turned out to be very expensive (from about € 8000.00), after I contacted various sauna manufacturers.

Floor plan of the basement room where the sauna should come.

Because I like to work with wood myself, I decided to build my own sauna. The sauna must accommodate two people (lying down) on the top benches, even if the room is not wide. We also wanted a pentagonal sauna with a corner door, because it saves space and fits optimally into our basement space.

In addition, there must also be room in the basement for a shower cabin and for a rest area with two loungers, so that the time between sauna sessions can also be pleasantly spent in the same room.

I would like to thank all members of the sauna forum “Saunafans”, who have supported and advised me on many smaller and larger questions and doubts. You can find that sauna forum here (DE).

Also a big thank you to Finsterbusch, who advised me in the forum, and who gives a lot of valuable tips on his website for building your own sauna..
