Squirrel feeding station

Eichhörnchen Futterstation

In our 2-room apartment in Frankfurt am Main we also had a wonderful terrace where we spent a lot of time. One day we had an unexpected visit from a squirrel on the terrace that we would soon call Fritz. In search of nuts, our Fritz climbed over the facade to us on the first floor several times a day. We then laid out walnuts and hid them in the flowerpots, which Fritz really liked.

I wanted to make it even easier for our new friend, so I built a feeding station where the nuts are stored dry but (after a short period of familiarization) are also directly accessible to squirrels.

Short assembly guide

I was inspired by an assembly guide I found online, but extended the top so I could also add a bowl for drinking water. I also provided the cover with a contact that I connected to a radio in our apartment. That’s what we heard every time Fritz came to get nuts.

Nest and offspring

Fritz quickly felt at home on our terrace. Literally, because he soon started building a roost (a squirrel’s nest) in the corner of our patio. He lived and sat there, even when we were sitting on the balcony. Fritz even had offspring there; 3 baby Fritzies.

In 2018 we moved out of the apartment and had to say goodbye to Fritz. We hope he and his offspring are doing well. Luckily, the new tenants took over the feeding station.
