Nesting box

Vögelchen

Birds in the garden are simply nice, no? After the feeding station for the birds, I also built a nesting box. This way, our garden would become even cosier for them! I have to admit, the concept is rather simple. But my son, who was 3 years old at the time, had a lot of fun to build the box with me.

Short manual

You take a piece of wood, cut it to size and screw a rod to it. Next, you take a flower pot and very carefully widen the lower hole with a file.

Important: each species of bird needs a different size for the hole. You can find the right size here. So we made a hole with a diameter of 28mm for our blue tits.

As a final step, we used power glue (outdoor) and glued the pot to the board. After an hour of drying, the house is ready to move in; Just hang it up and you’re done!

TIP: since the bird house has to be emptied after the breeding season, it is practical to use an adhesive that can later be easily cut with a cutter knife. That simplifies things. Then new glue and the house is ready for the next brood!

Does it work?

I was a bit skeptical at first too. Would birds use a flower pot as a nest? The answer is definitely yes!

After the blue tits discovered the house, it wasn’t long before they kept flying back and forth with moss. At some point, however, only one blue tit flew back and forth. The mother had moved in and hatched the eggs there.

Then it got really loud around May; the little blue tits kept asking for food. And then from one day to the next it was quiet in the house: the family fled. Surely they will come back at the next breeding season; the house is cleaned and already waiting for you.
